Call for Submissions: Be Proud in your Creativity!
DISABLED PRIDE MONTH JULY 2020

Hello! It’s a really difficult time for the arts at the moment and so we wanted to do something to celebrate the work of creative people and share art more widely. So we thought we would give something new a try! July is Disability Pride Month so we thought this would be a perfect time to try something new on a theme. Here at the Southampton Art in Health Forum we are passionate about the connections between art, creativity, health challenges and living with long term conditions.

During the month of July we would like to showcase the work of creative people who self identify as having a disability (we won’t be asking for any details). For that to work we need artwork - that’s where you come in.

Please send us a message on Facebook or Twitter with your artwork attached, if you would like to share a little about what the artwork (or art in general) means to you or tell us about your disability your welcome to but this is not essential. We will then post up the artworks to our page as they come in, it will be like a virtual gallery.

Some little rules because we want to make sure that we are doing this in an accessible way. * Any medium of art is welcome! * If your artwork is an image you must provide an image description, this is essential so people with visual impairments. * If your submission is video based it must have captions (Youtube can auto generate captions but it’s worth reading through to check for accuracy).

We know for many people the word disability is a tricky term so we just want to stress this is why we won’t be asking any questions and have put the emphasis on self identification. You don't have to feel like an expert artist, it is more about how you express your creativity that counts in a way that is positive and helpful to you.

Studio Upstairs 30 Years Exhibition, Hackney – 13 December 2018
The exhibition will take place at Stour Space, Hackney on Thursday 13 December, 6.30pm. The charity Studio Upstairs was founded in 1988 to meet the needs of people moving out of the psychiatric health system, by providing a supportive community-based environment where members can communicate their experiences through making art. It is now celebrating its 30th year in London, has a branch in Bristol, and has recently opened in Croydon.
Zlatinka Hristova, Director of Studio Upstairs, says: “This exhibition is an opportunity for us to celebrate the resilience of the charity and the impact that it has made to many individual lives over the past 30 years, allowing the artists to tell their own story through their artwork”.

Research report recommends music in care

A new national report from Live Music Now and the University of Winchester recommends suggests that live music is 'essential' to all UK care homes. The report presents evidence on the benefits of music to people living and working in care, and provides practical guidance about how music can be introduced affordably and sustainably.
The report concludes that
1. Participating and delivering a music intervention to residents in care homes can provide positive social experiences as well as creative engagement, fun and a sense of achievement.
2. Musicians can play an important role in nurturing the wellbeing of elderly people in care.
3. Regular music making can enhance the working and living environment for care home residents and staff.
4. Music interventions can play a crucial role in awakening a sense of identity and empowerment for care home residents, facilitated by musicians and care teams working together.
5. Strategic planning at the outset establishes an essential structure and definition of tasks that provides a framework for the music programme.

Creativity and Wellbeing Week is going national!

London Arts in Health Forum and the Culture, Health and Wellbeing Alliance are working together to expand Creativity and Wellbeing Week into a national event, building on its enormous success across London. Creativity and Wellbeing Week 2019 will run from 10-16 June 2019.
Now in its eighth year, Creativity and Wellbeing Week has grown to nearly 350 events in London in 2018, with over 35,000 people attending talks, workshops, performances, exhibitions and discussions.
To build on the enormous success of the Week across London, we are now expanding to become a national event, as a collaboration between London Arts in Health Forum and the Culture, Health and Wellbeing Alliance.
Creativity and Wellbeing Week will feature a number of key events, including a focus on the support arts professionals receive working in health and wellbeing, and a networking event in collaboration with Paintings in Hospitals.
We are encouraging individuals and organisations working with creativity and culture in relation to health and wellbeing across the country to submit public events to the website. Your events will appear on a national map with the information you provide to us.
Visit http://www.creativityandwellbeing.org.uk/ and follow the simple instructions to submit your information.
Please use the logos for London Arts in Health Forum, the Week and the Culture, Health and Wellbeing Alliance, attached here, on your own publicity to link them to the Week.
If you are interested in putting on an event but aren’t sure where, or if you’re a venue that is unsure what event to host, please get in touch with neil@lahf.org.uk or info@culturehealthandwellbeing.org.uk and we may be able to help make some new partnerships!

Survey for creative practitioners: what support do you get?Researchers at Gray’s School of Art, Robert Gordon University are looking for individuals who are creative practitioners who are currently working in participatory arts for health and wellbeing or have done so in the last 18 months.
Participants will have:
·         Undertaken paid work in participatory arts for health and wellbeing using any art form including visual arts, theatre, dance, music and performance, writing or any other creative discipline;
·         Delivered a minimum of 8 sessions per year or have done in the last 18 months;
·         Worked on a freelance or employed basis or both;
·         Worked primarily in the UK.
The word 'creative practitioner' is used to describe a person who primarily identifies themselves an an artist working in any creative discipline. We recognise there are practical and organisational challenges in delivering work of this kind but this is not the focus of this study.
This survey is also not directed at organisations, commissioners or cultural leaders, a seperate part of the research will seek experiences of this group.
The survey will take approximately 10 minutes to complete and closes at Midnight on the 3rd December 2018.
